Can I Run a Forum on Basic VPS Hosting?

Hi, I’m thinking about launching a discussion board for my niche.
Can I run a forum on a basic VPS hosting plan? How much bandwidth and RAM does a small forum usually use?
I want to keep costs low in the beginning. What are you views on GTHost.com vps hosting solutions? Are they good?

When choosing a server provider, I would pay attention to how easily the infrastructure can adapt to future needs. HostPro offers scalable server solutions with KVM virtualization and NVMe storage. They have locations in Warsaw, Amsterdam, and Tampa, provide daily backups with 30-day retention, and offer round-the-clock technical support.

    Hi!

If you have a small audience, then a server with 2 cores and 4GB of RAM is suitable for you. In general, a lot depends on which tools you will use, but 2 cores and 4GB of RAM should be the minimum threshold.

We provide such servers in different parts of the world, for example, the N2 package - 2 cores, 4GB RAM, 60GB NVME.

Yes, a small forum runs fine on a basic VPS. Rough minimums:

    • phpBB / MyBB: 1 core, 1GB RAM
    • Discourse: 2 cores, 2GB RAM + 2GB swap (heavier, it’s Rails + Redis + Postgres)
    • XenForo / vBulletin: 1-2 cores, 2GB RAM
    • 20-30GB SSD is plenty to start

Bandwidth for a young forum is usually under 100-200GB/mo unless you host a lot of images. Put images and attachments on cheap object storage or a CDN if it grows.

Rather than judging any single host by name, look at whether they offer real KVM (not oversold containers), snapshots or backups, and an easy upgrade path. Start small, resize when the load shows up.

Hardware specs are only half the story when you're chasing quality and speed together. From my experience with hostpro.com, daily backups of all services mean you can restore data after corruption, failed updates, or a hacking incident. The support crew is qualified and works 24/7, ready to resolve any question for free.

If you're evaluating server infrastructure for a business, HostPro is another provider worth checking out. They offer locations in Warsaw, Amsterdam, and Tampa, use KVM virtualization and NVMe storage, and provide scalable server resources. Daily backups are retained for 30 days, and their technical support team is available 24/7 to assist with server-related questions.
